QR Code Scam Alert — Fake Parking & Toll Violations Targeting Illinois Residents
A fake parking and toll violation notice is circulating in the Chicagoland area. The document looks official but contains a QR code that installs malware. Here's how to spot it and protect yourself.
A Fake Notice Is Going Around — Don't Scan That QR Code
If you've received an email or text message about an unpaid parking or toll violation, stop — don't click anything and don't scan any QR codes.
A fraudulent notice is currently circulating throughout the Chicagoland area, and it's convincing enough to fool even cautious people. Local police departments, including the Hoffman Estates Police Department, have issued community alerts warning residents about this scam.
What the Scam Looks Like
The fake notice is designed to look like an official document from the State of Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County. It includes:
- An official-looking state seal and court letterhead
- A fake case number (e.g., IL-26-TR-273196)
- A named judge ("John Smith")
- References to real Illinois statutes (625 ILCS 5/11-1301)
- A hearing date and location at 50 West Washington Street, Chicago
- A QR code at the bottom with instructions to "scan to settle your unpaid balance"
The document claims you've committed a parking or toll violation and threatens consequences including default judgment, additional fines, and referral for collection action if you don't appear or pay.
The QR code is the trap. Scanning it can install malware on your device, steal your personal and financial information, or redirect you to a phishing site designed to capture your credit card details.
How to Spot This Scam
Here are the red flags that give it away:
- Courts don't send violations by text or email. Real traffic violations come by mail or are handed to you in person by law enforcement.
- Courts don't use QR codes. Official court documents direct you to pay through government websites or in person.
- Generic names are a giveaway. "Judge John Smith" is about as generic as it gets.
- Urgency and threats. Scammers create panic with tight deadlines and severe consequences to prevent you from thinking critically.
- Unsolicited contact. If you didn't receive a physical ticket, there's no violation.
What to Do If You Receive This Notice
- Do not scan the QR code — This is the most important step.
- Do not reply to the email or text message.
- Delete the message from your phone or email.
- Report it — If you'd like to help authorities track the scam, forward the message to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
What to Do If You Already Scanned the QR Code
If you've already interacted with the scam:
- Contact your bank immediately — Alert them to potential fraud and monitor your accounts for unauthorized charges.
- File a police report — Contact your local police department to document the incident.
- Run a security scan — Use your phone's built-in security features or a trusted antivirus app to scan for malware.
- Change your passwords — If you entered any login credentials on the scam site, change those passwords immediately.
- Enable two-factor authentication — Add an extra layer of security to your important accounts.
QR Code Safety Tips for Businesses
This scam is a reminder that QR code attacks are becoming more sophisticated. For business owners:
- Train your employees to verify QR codes before scanning, especially in emails or text messages.
- Never scan QR codes from unknown sources — If you receive an unexpected document with a QR code, verify it through official channels first.
- Use a QR code scanner that previews the URL before opening it. Most modern phone cameras show the destination URL — check it before tapping.
- Keep devices updated — Software updates include security patches that protect against known malware.
Stay Informed
Scams like these evolve constantly. The best defense is staying informed and thinking twice before acting on unexpected messages — especially ones that create urgency or ask you to scan something.
